How to install a mini split yourself

Installers quote $1,500–$4,000 to hang a single-zone mini split. Most of that is labor you can do over a weekend — if you get the line set, the vacuum, and the electrical right. Here's exactly how, from a licensed contractor.

Can you really install a mini split yourself?

Yes — thousands of homeowners do it every year. But "mini split" covers two different DIY jobs, and knowing which one you have decides everything.

Easiest path

Pre-charged / DIY systems

How to install a mini split: 8 steps

The overview every DIYer should understand before starting. The course shows each one on video, on real equipment.

Plan placement & clearances

Pick an interior wall high enough to throw air across the room, with clearance above and beside the head. Set the outdoor spot for airflow, a short line-set path, and easy drainage — within the max length and lift.

Mount the wall plate & drill the penetration

Level and anchor the back plate to studs. Bore a ~3" hole through the wall, sloped slightly downhill to the outside so condensate drains by gravity.

Hang the indoor head

Feed the line set, drain, and wire through the sleeve, then seat the indoor unit on the plate. A "mighty bracket" jig holds it off the wall while you connect behind it.

Set the outdoor unit

Place it on a level pad or wall bracket with vibration-isolation feet, above the snow line in cold climates. Keep clearances so it can breathe and drain.

Connect the line set — the flares

Cut square, deburr, and make clean flares, then torque each nut to spec (a little flare sealant helps).

Wire it up

Land the S1-S2-S3 interconnect per the diagram, and install a disconnect within sight of the outdoor unit, sized to the nameplate. Not confident on 240V? Bring in an electrician for this step.

Pull a vacuum

Evacuate the line set and indoor coil below 500 microns and hold a decay test to prove it's dry and leak-free.

Release the charge & start up

Open the service valves to release the factory charge, restore power, and run it in cooling and heating. Confirm a healthy temperature split and you're done.

Avoid these

The 5 mistakes that ruin DIY installs

  • Bad flares. Cut crooked, not deburred, or over-torqued — the leak shows up weeks later as a unit that quit cooling.
  • Skipping the vacuum. Moisture and air left in the lines destroy the compressor. "It ran a while" isn't a vacuum — you need a micron gauge.
  • Wrong electrical. Undersized wire/breaker, no disconnect in sight, or a loose lug that cooks the terminal.
  • Oversizing. Too many BTUs short-cycles, never dehumidifies, and wears out early. Size to the room.
  • No slope on the drain. A flat or uphill condensate line means water on your floor.

Mini split install FAQ

Can I install a mini split myself?

Yes. Pre-charged (DIY) systems with quick-connect line sets are the most beginner-friendly. Standard systems require flaring the line set and pulling a vacuum, and in the U.S., handling refrigerant legally requires EPA 608 certification.

Do I have to pull a vacuum?

On anything that isn't a sealed, pre-charged quick-connect system, yes. Evacuate below 500 microns and hold a decay test. Skipping it leaves moisture in the lines — the number-one cause of early compressor failure.

How long does a DIY install take?

Plan on most of a day (4–8 hours) for a first single-zone install. The flares, vacuum, and electrical take the most time and care.

Do I need an electrician?

The unit needs a dedicated circuit and a disconnect within sight of the outdoor unit, sized to the nameplate. If you're not qualified and comfortable with 240V, have a licensed electrician make the connection.

What size mini split do I need?

Roughly 25 BTU per square foot as a starting point, then adjust for insulation, sun, and ceiling height — and confirm with a load calculation. Sizing is covered in depth in the course.
